“Assessment of Economic Instruments used in Integrated Waste Management Workshops” were held within the scope of Technical Assistance for Assessment of Türkiye’s Potential on Transition to Circular Economy (DEEP Project).

The opening speeches of the first workshop organised in Gaziantep on 22-24 May 2024 were made by Ms. Sabriye Ayhan, Head of Circular Economy and Waste Management Department, Directorate General of Environmental Management, Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and Mr. Mihail Dimovski, Team Leader, DEEP Project. In her speech at the opening of the workshop, Ms. Sabriye Ayhan said that "The use of resources in the current linear economy model is not sustainable. For this reason, it is very important that waste can be used as a resource in the circular economy. In this direction, it is important to create collection systems and economic tools suitable for our country." In his speech, Mr. Mihail Dimovski stated that the feedback received from the workshop will make a great contribution to the Circular Economy Action Plan.

The second workshop was held in Samsun on 29-31 May 2024 and the third workshop was held in Konya on 3-5 July 2024.

In the workshops, each of which lasted for three days, presentations were made on “Waste Prevention, Reduction, Source Separation and Collection Practices in EU Cities in Line with Circular Economy", “Alternative Collection Models for Different Waste Flows in EU Member States", " Zero Waste System and Source Separation and Collection Practices in Türkiye", "Assessing the Institutional, Administrative, Technical and Financial Capacities of National and Local Governments and Different Economic Instruments". In addition; good practice examples of municipalities were discussed.

In the working group sessions held during the workshops, the focus was on "alternative collection models and comparison of the current system" and “geographically and demographically most feasible models, financial considerations” were discussed. In these round table activities, which were held with the active participation of representatives of local governments and public institutions, the groups presented ideas that will contribute to the work in the field of zero waste and circular economy.

On the third day of each of the workshops, which were held with the participation of 237 people in total, field visits were made to waste sorting facilities, waste collection centres and mobile waste collection centres in order to see the zero waste good practice examples of the relevant municipalities on site.
