"Training of Trainers on Integrated Waste Management in Line with Circular Economy" was held in Sakarya

"Training of Trainers on Integrated Waste Management in Line with Circular Economy" organised within the scope of "Technical Assistance for Assessment of Türkiye's Potential on Transition to Circular Economy (DEEP) Project" was held in Sakarya on 16-19 September 2024.

Held between 16 - 19 September, the opening speech of the training was made by Fatih Turan, Director General of Environmental Management of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change. In his speech, Mr Turan emphasised the importance of the "prevent - reduce - reuse - recycle" approach, Türkiye's progress on "zero waste" and the contribution of these efforts and the DEEP Project to the transition to a circular economy in line with EU norms. Mr. Turan used the following statements:

"Thanks to our Zero Waste Project and actions in line with the principles of circular economy, we have increased our recovery rate from 13 per cent in 2017 to approximately 35 per cent, and our aim is to increase the recovery rate to 60 per cent in 2035. As a country in the process of candidacy to the European Union, our country continues to work towards accelerating the transition to a circular economy in accordance with EU regulations."

General Director Mr Fatih Turan stated that all parties have important duties in the transition of our country to circular economy and that it is important to improve the institutional capacity of the personnel of our Ministry with this event on waste management and training techniques including resource efficiency, recovery, recycling and industrial symbiosis applications in circular economy.

On the other hand, after the completion of this training, it will also contribute to the training of the personnel of the relevant stakeholders involved in integrated waste management, including our Provincial Directorates, other institutions, organisations and the private sector.

During the four-day training, information was provided by national and international experts and institutional officials on current developments within the scope of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, circular economy and waste management, Good Practices in the EU on Material Recovery, Future of Plastics in the Circular Economy, End of Waste Practices in the EU, Evaluation of Alternative Collection Methods in the EU and Türkiye, Waste Prevention, Reduction and Separate Collection at Source Practices in the EU in line with the Circular Economy.

In addition, on the last day of the training, the participants were informed about effective training and presentation techniques by a competent training specialist.
